Sleep deprivation can kill you (I think about 4 days is the breaking point, but I heard that the record is 11), and cause you to hallucinate!. Deprivation also makes it difficult to lose weight and maybe a pre-cursor to diabetes

Circadian rhythms are endogenously generated, and can be entrained by external cues, called Zeitgebers!. The primary one is daylight!. -Wiki

Zietgebers also are the cues that trigger drowsiness when you get jet lag, you're "messing with" your circadian rhythm!.

Also, the photoreceptors in the eye translate light/dark to the pineal gland that secretes melatonin, which peaks at night and decreases during the day and causes drowsiness and decrease in body temperature!.

A healthy amount of time to sleep is about 7 hours!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
