You're asking the right question, because it's the type of shoe, not the shoe manufacturer, you want to look for first!. Your foot might be just the right width for Nike, but if you're looking at a running shoe they make for a high-arched foot, you're not doing yourself any favors!.

The two basic types of running shoes for flatfooters are stability and motion control!. The heavier you are and the more extreme a pronator you are, the more you need a motion control shoe!. Both of these shoe types help to keep your foot pointed straight ahead when you are running, rather than over pronating!. Motion control shoes are heavier duty, but the trade off is that they typically weigh a bit more, and are a bit more clunky!. But if you need a motion control shoe, the tradeoff is worth it!.

I checked your other questions to see if you're a heavy guy, and I guess since you were a gym rat at 220+ pounds, you probably might want to go for the motion control shoe!. The best thing to do is to visit a really good local athletic shoe store (better than the national chain stores), where the employees stop long enough to analyze your gait and you feet, to give some thought to what you need!. Be sure to bring an old pair of shoes so they can analyze the wear pattern on your shoes!. If they don't do this, just say thanks and try another shoe store until you find one that does!.

You might have a "good" pair of Nikes, but you'd be surprised how quickly a pair of running shoes needs to be replaced, if you're hitting the track on a regular basis!. Speaking of which, if you can run on a track or other surface that's good for running, it's kinder to your feet than pounding them on pavement!.

Nikes can be good if you have an average width foot, but if your foot is wide or narrow, you'll want to try on some shoes from New Balance, Saucony, Brooks and Asics, where you can get a shoe in the width that's right for you!. I just don't understand why some companies (like Nike) figure that one width fits all!.

Flat feet often are not painful, but since your left foot is hurting, you should also check to see if you're developing plantar fasciitis, which can occur when you've got a flat foot!. Basically it's a stretching of the muscle-like fascia that attaches at the front of the heel, and pretty much covers the arch area of the sole of the foot between the front of the heel and the ball of the foot!. If you've got PF, your feet might be especially painful in the morning!? But for now if your flat foot is only hurting halfway through your run and afterwards, it could be that the correct shoe is all you need to run pain-free!. But pay attention to this, and do not listen to anyone who advises you to "run through the pain!." It will only get worse if you do!.

Why not visit a podiatrist to have your feet checked out!? A good one will probably suggest that you try an off the shelf pair of arch supports before trying to sell you an expensive pair of custom orthotics!. But if your flat foot is already hurting, it might be clear to you podiatrist from the start that you might benefit from a pair of custom orthotics!. I'm really glad I went that route!.

Just curious, is it only your left foot that's flat!? You should be choosing the shoe that's most comfortable for your flat foot, especially since you're starting to have some problems with it!. But you probably want to pay attention to your right foot too, to prevent it from going flat!. It happened to me that way, my right foot was flat by the time I was a young teen, but when I took up running in high school and college, it caused my left arch to "fall" too, although not as much!. Afterwards, I wished I'd tried to prevent my left foot from flattening out too, but it was too late by then!.

I'm also curious to know if you had any problems enlisting with a flat foot, did you have any problem with MEPS!? Or did your foot flatten out while you were in the service!? Or maybe you were in the Navy, which I understand is pretty casual about enlisting guys with flat feet, as long as they are not painful!?

Good luck, and feel free to shoot me an email if you need more help in choosing a specific shoe!.

I would go see a foot doc- they have shoes that they can recommend!. I would try wider shoes so your feet can kind of (for lack of a better word) stretch out!.

I personally would find shoes with a low arch and a little more padding around the arch ( a little more cushion for the arch, when you step)

Or to re form your arch you could get those braces for feet and help reform it!.!.

Sorry if this didnt help at all!. I tried though lol
