Mild hernias can be left alone!. If it hurts or bothers you, you can get it fixed!.

A hernia occurs when something slips into a position where it doesn't belong!. For example, weakness in the abdominal wall might allow part of what's inside to slip out of place!. In the case of mild hernias, this is no big deal, except that it can produce an odd sensation and it might ache sometimes!.

For severe hernias, the risk is that something will slip out of place and get stuck, causing the blood supply to be cut off, which can cause death of tissue and gangrene!. This is called a strangulated hernia, and requires immediate surgical repair!. Fortunately, it's not common, as most hernias aren't that bad!.

Hernias don't go away on their own (except occasionally in newborns), and sometimes they slowly get worse over time!. As long as they don't risk strangulation, getting them fixed is entirely up to the patient!. Someone who does a lot of sports, especially lifting, might want to get a hernia fixed, since the strenuous activity might encourage it to get worse!.

Surgery on average hernias is very quick (about half an hour) and can often be done on an outpatient basis!. You go in in the morning, and you're out by noon!. It aches for a week and you can't drive or go to work for a few days at least!. The surgery consists of putting everything back where it belongs, then reinforcing the weakness that allowed things to slide out of place in the first place!. Surgery for a strangulated hernia is much more involved, but luckily there aren't many strangulated hernias!.

Hernias have nothing to do with sex and have no effect on sex, by the way!. It's true that a common type of hernia occurs in the groin, but that's the only connection!. If you plan to get pregnant, you should have your hernia fixed well in advance, since the high pressure inside the abdomen from pregnancy can significantly worsen a hernia!. Also, avoid gaining lots of weight if you have a hernia (that produces pressure, too), and if you're overweight, try to lose some weight!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Go to the doctor immediately, you'll probably need surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
