It can also be a siatic nerve problem if the pain is severe and burning!. The pain will often start between the hip bone and "butt" area, and travel down the leg usually in the back or on the side and often times travel right into the foot!. For many, laying down will make it worse tho it usually doesn't matter whether you sit, stand, etc!. you will still have pain with it!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
A 'shooting' type pain is usually the result of a nerve entrapment!. This could mean a nerve is being compressed, pinched or damaged!.
Its a little hard to help further without any more information!. If your friend has injured themselves in the leg and there is a lot of swelling in an area, this can cause compression of a nerve!.
Mentioned previously was a condition called sciatica!. This is a compression of a nerve at the level lower of the hip/buttocks which can cause a 'shooting' sensation down the leg!.

Where does it start!? The calf, thigh, the heel or the front/ball of the foot, or the arch!?
Did it just happen, or did he step on a rock earlier maybe!?
