If an artery is punctured..?!

Question: If an artery is punctured!.!.!?
In a hypothetical situation, if a 24 year old male who is fit and healthy was to puncture his femoral artery as the result of an open fracture to his thigh,

- How quickly would he lose blood!?
- How much time would he have before dying!?
- Would elevation of the legs, a donut bandage around his upper thigh and constant pressure on the femoral and brachial pressure points slow the bleeding and loss of fluid!?
- If so, by how much!? How much extra time would this give him!?

This is purely a research question, and thanks in advance for your answers!. Best answer will get 10 pointsWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The femoral artery is fairly large (about 2!.5cm in diameter) and it bleeds out very quickly!. If the artery were completely severed, the person would die in a matter of minutes losing over 20% of the body's total volume of blood!.

A bandage to put pressure on the artery and elevation to keep it above the heart will buy the person some time, but not much!. An artery of that size has to be clamped to stop the bleeding!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Um, you'd probably see a lot of blood coming out of the wound and likely you would probably pass out from blood loss and then someone has to clean more than just blood!. Blood that travels through arteries is being pushed with a lot of pressure!. So it wouldn't take long!. And by the way, don't apply pressure to the arm (brachial pressure point)!. It makes no sense to do that when you are bleeding out your damn leg!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not sure how much time, but it would be minutes, unless of course you did indeed place a stop to the bleeding with pressure and possibly a tourniquet of some sort!. Again, it would probably only extend his life long enough to be placed in an ambulance and whisked to a hospital!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would think that it wouldn't take long to bleed out if you cut a big artery like the carotid or femoral!. Direct constant pressure (with a call to EMS) would prolong life!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
