The most practical advice is simply to switch pain management clinics!. You are not going to change the minds of misguided opiophobes!. Why try!? Yes, your age is a factor in this discrimination!. You are more likely to be viewed as a drug seeker!. You can join or contact the Pain Relief Network or the National Foundation for the Treatment of Pain!. The latter offers a chronic pain certification program!. Both can point you in the right direction or provide networking opportunities with other pain patients in your state!. Your fellow pain patients can tell you which doctors prescribe opiates and which don't!. Be prepared to pee in a cup on your first visit and sign a pain contract!. Unfortunately the "War on Drugs" has turned into a war on doctors and patients!. Some people don't recognize the difference between those of us who take opiates for relief vs addicts!. Scary!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your doctor is right!. It can become less and less effective!. I have a relative, who does not see a pain management specialist and was taking vicodin for years in very LARGE doses!. She has now been bumped up to methadone!.

If you are really unsure of this, discuss this with your doctor!. If you have been on the vicodin for a long time you probably should be weaned off rather then go cold turkey, but I could be wrong!. You could also get a second opinion if you really think that he is wrong!.

As strange as it may seem, antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications are often very effective in pain management!. When you are depressed and anxious, which anyone who is in pain for a long period of time would be, your body becomes less capable of handling the pain!. You feel it more, and your body's natural opiates don't function as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i would go back to ur orthopeadic and tell him that u are disappointed in the level of care that u are receiving from the pain management doctor and he can either find u a different pain management doc, do something to help with ur problems(besides shuffling u from doc to doc) or u will find another ortho that WILL DO SOMETHING

why arent u a candidate for surgery is it because of ur age!.!.!. cause if thats the case then u need to find another doc who will do the surgery that u need!.!.!. my friend is 28 and injured her back at 27 they told her that they did not want to do surgery because of her age, so they shuffled her back and forth from doc to pain management and PT and nothing was helping then finaly 5 months after her injury they did the surgery and she has been great ever since(no problems)

i too had problems with the pain management doc that i was sent to!.!.!. telling me that the pain meds i was on were causing more harm then good and the same crap u were handed!.!. so after one visit i refused to go back!.!. i was also given an antidepressant for my pain!.!.i was sent to the pain management idiot after the ortho idiot that i was seeing decided that i did not need surgery on my knee(on the second visit, after on the first saying that surgery was necessary)

i went to a new ortho who immediatly saw the problem and knew that it definatly needed surgery and NOT MORE PT

best of luck to youWww@Answer-Health@Com

From personal experience, I was taking Vicodin, about 8-10 tabs a day, for about 6 months, and then other pain meds totally a year!. I know vicodin became ineffective for me, along with every other type of narcotic!. You have to trust your doctor and allow him to work with you to find another alternative!. You won't get off vicodin if you keep taking it!. Narcotics such as vicodin are in the same class as cocaine!. You need to trust your doctor, and quit freaking out because he won't write you a script for a pain killer!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
