Dave the answer to this question is to start on a resistive exercise program!. I know your initial reaction to this is horror or shock!. But the truth of the matter is that every time that a new muscle fiber is created it acts as a furnace that will continue to consume calories long after the exercise is done!. Dieting will not do that!. Cardio is good and along with the resistance program will certainly help!. The program that I would recommend for you is super slow movements!. For this you are going to have to join a gym and use only machines!. The machines will support your back and decrease the likelihood of injuries!. The program requires that you check the manly idea of lifting heavy!. You will use a very light weight and do the movement very slowly!. There are two parts of a movement!. The part where the muscle contracts is called a concentric contraction!. The phase where the muscle is lengthening or letting go is called the eccentric!. The later phase is where the muscle gets stronger!. So on the lengthening phase it should be done to a slow count of ten!. The shortening phase should be done to a count of five!. Only one set of exercises is necessary per body part!. So the strain on the body is small and the gains large!. Talk to the people at local gyms about this and find someone that is familiar with this type of lifting!. If they are not sure about it find someone else!. Remember for you this must be done with machines to accomadate your back!. You could also talk to a physical therapist about this!. By doing this system the abdominals will get stronger secondarilly!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Carbs!

Going to the gym three times a week and cutting back on calories did not do the job for my husband!. He was so frustrated!. One day, he was working out near a professional trainer and he told my husband, "One word: carbs!."

He began counting carbs instead of calories and within three months he had dropped two pants sizes, from a 44 to a 40!. It's as if his belly were melting away!.

Check out the Glycemic Index for a chart that will explain good carbs vs bad carbs!.

Armed with this knowledge, my husband decided to try the Atkins Diet and regardless of how much bad press that one gets, my husband's doctor was amazed at how much weight he lost (largely in the belly) and how quickly his blood sugar numbers and blood pressure settled into the normal range -- all within a short period of time, less than four months at the time of that check-up!. (In fact, the doctor wound up on the Atkins Diet, too, and was very pleased with his own results!.)

For me, I prefer the South Beach Diet!. It takes longer but you're not as restricted in the foods you can eat!. Their website has good information on the Glycemic Index!.

Once you learn the difference in good carbs vs bad carbs, you don't really need a formal diet because you'll know which foods are at fault for that belly!. My husband's way of watching his weight now is simply is by eliminating or cutting way back on white food: sugar, white processed flour as in white bread and pastry, white rice, and white potatoes!.

add on: I left pasta off the bad carb list but we have found a low carb pasta that we really like and now pasta is no longer a concern!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dave, it's not about toning and strengthening your abs, although that can help if you're able to do it, but about overall weight loss!. Like a lot of men, you may be carrying nearly all your excess in the abdominal area, and to lose it, you need to lose the excess weight, not exercise the area where it's settled!.

Any cardiovascular exercise you can do will help burn calories, and revising your eating habits just a bit can contribute to slow weight loss--the kind that tends to stay off!.

For starters, measure your portions at one meal a day!. Just one!. Portion control is huge, and if you can have 1/4 less of the dense calorie foods, you'll make progress!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Any cardio that you find comfortable!. Sit-ups and crunches won't get rid of a beer belly anyway, they will only build up the abdominal muscle underneath it; so you may get great abs, but they'll be hidden away under that beer belly!

I have all kinds of metal in my knee, and I personally find swimming a great way to get a low-impact cardio workout!. Find whatever you can do that works for you and gets your heart rate up! Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dave I would take the advice that Richard C (The Physiotherapist) Is giving in his answer!.I myself have 3 herniated discs and two operations later (screws, rods and a cage replacing one disc)!. Just to add to Richard C's answer I found my medications slowed down my metabolism so I ate more often TIMES a day BUT NOT MORE as in quantity as instructed by my Dr!. Hope this helps you Mate!. Well, first you need to stop drinking, but if you can't do that at least only drink one beer a day and after noon but before 8:00 anything you eat or drink after 8:00 goes directly to fat!. Next eat healthier and eat less!. For instance for breakfast eat a granola bar and some milk, or some fruit or a bowl of cereal!. Then for lunch have a sandwich or something and don't go out to eat allot!. Then for dinner eat a normal sized and healthy dinner!. Then the most importantthing is eexercise go for a walk or run if you can!. Good Luck!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The only way is to lose weight!. A lot of weight!. It will help your back too!.

No amount of sit ups and crunces would fix the beer belly anyway!.

Also, it's the most important to rid yourself of belly fat than any other!.!.!. since it's the worst for your health!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
