Question: Have you successfully quit smoking for a year or more!? How did you do it!?
I'm trying to quit for good!. I'd love to hear your stories!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I tried many times before i was successful!. You really need to make up your mind that you want to quit, and you need to have a list of reasons why!. You have to imagine yourself as a nonsmoker!. change your self image from "smoker" to "nonsmoker" i know it sounds a little weird but many books on self-change will tell you to do exactly that!. When i had urges to smoke i would relax, tell myself that i'm not a smoker anymore, and I'd think of the reasons why I enjoy not smoking anymore!. and that would be it!. Also, nicotine gum can be very, very helpful!. you can do it, just make up your mind and take it one day at a time!. GOOD LUCK, it's worth it to quit!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Like many others who have answered your question I tried several times to quit before I actually did!. It wasn't until I dealt with my psychological addiction that I found the power to quit for good!. When I tried using patches, gums I would quit for a while but I would always start up again!.

This was because I was only dealing with my physical addiction!.Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one!. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes!. As soon as I dealt with my psychological reasons for smoking I quit, first time and more importantly for good!.

Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction!.

A friend of mine's dad quit smoking successfully through hypnosis and gum chewing!. Also if he brought home cigarettes she would immediately flush them down the toilet, or his wife would break them or destroy them!. So pretty much it became useless in buying them!. If you don't have anyone living with you or friends around who can perform the actions (because the smoker certainly can't) then do things to the cigarettes that make you not want to smoke them, like pouring pepper all over them, getting them wet or use something else that is quick and conveniently around!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Mike and Flick have got it right, you have to want to be a non smoker!. The actual physical side effects of nicotine withdrawal are mild, the difficult bit is adjusting your mind set to being a non smoker who doesn't reach for a cigarette at so many times of the day, once you do that it's easy and incredibly rewarding - I quit 4 months ago after smoking for over 20 years, I cannot remember ever feeling better!. OK so not yet a year but I am happy in the knowledge that I'll never be a smoker again!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I quit smoking cold turkey over 3 years ago!. For me it was just finding a reason to quit which was my wife!. Although the cravings for me never went away I just found that I have no want to smoke!. I honestly believe that if you really want to quit you will but sometimes we say we want to but really don't!. Before quitting for good I had "quit" 3 times previously and the longest I had gone was 1 month!. The fact of the matter was the only reason I was quitting then was cause i couldn't afford to smoke!. So if you really want to quit then I think you will whether it be for you or for someone else!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I gave up in January 2003 without any help at all!.

I had tried and failed before and I firmly believe that the difference this time was the fact that I really wanted to do it!. Many people try and give up smoking because they feel as though they should, or they are pressured into it and not because they really want to!. It may seem to be a small matter but to me it made all the difference!.

The only concession I made was to keep my last few cigarettes on me for about 2/3 months!. It gave me a kind of security knowing that, if I got really stressed, I had them there ready!. I think that I would have gone into panic mode, wanting one but not having any! It seemed to make it easier knowing that I could have one, IF I really wanted one!. I never did have one, and have not touched them since!. I do get the occasional craving but I just remember how much I hate the smell, not to mention the way the ash gets everywhere!. I have dreamt about smoking and have woken up feeling really guilty, then relief when I realised it was just a dream!

Good luck and I hope you succeed!.

EDIT - Mike's advice is very good!. I remember someone telling me never to think about myself as a smoker or even an ex-smoker, but to think of myself as a non-smoker!. He said that if someone offered me a fag, I should say "no thanks, I don't smoke" instead of "no thanks, I am trying to give up"!. I had forgotten about that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Me, my wife, and many other people I know have stopped smoking by reading a book!. Sounds too easy to be true, I know!. I was a little skeptical too!. The book is "The easyway to stop smoking" by Allen Carr!. He has a website and seminars and other junk, but I recommend just going to Barnes and Noble or any big book store and buying his book for about $15!. My mom bought it for us kids, and me and my wife and my cousin all read it and quit!. The best part is that you smoke/chew tobacco as you read it, and only stop smoking after you finish the book!. Think its like a 95% success rating!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi!.!. Good Question
Stopping smoking was a difficult task for me, but it is well worth it to quit that nasty habit!. For me, it was the hardest thing I ever did!. I hate cigarette makers :) I found this site called http://snipurl!.com/3pxhj where I found some help to quit my bad habit!. After doing some of the things I found on there, I was able to quit in about 2 weeks and have been off that habit for several months!. I now sleep alot better and do simple things without feeling so winded!. You can find more information at their addiction section http://snipurl!.com/3pxhj !. I used this to get started and cannot recommend it higher!. God Bless Www@Answer-Health@Com
