Answers:
The sciatic nerve runs from the spinal cord of the lower back to the buttock region (gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus muscles), the lower leg, and the foot!.

Direct compression of the nerve causes a 'pins & needles' sensation (parasthesia) that causes a feeling of numbness!. Compression can occur along the spine (lower back: L3/L4 vertebrae), the pelvic region (sacral nerves: S2,S3,S4), and the buttocks (compression of gluteus muscles from sitting down)!. Chronic muscle contraction causes decreased blood flow to the nerves causing the nerves to fire off, and send signals to the brain!.

The sensation of numbness vs!. pain has to do with the rate at which the nerve is firing off!. A sensation of pain is occurs when the nerve fires off at a high rate!. The type of nerve also plays a role in the sensation felt (e!.g!. itching, burning, sharp/dull pains)!.

Hope that helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com
