Answers:
Knee infections are, relatively speaking, common in a pediatric hospital!. The physicians are often unable to say what the original source of the infection is, because there may not be evidence for it at the time!. This usually does not change the treatment course!. However, it is still usually something common like: insect bite that allowed entry of bacteria into the blood, that was then seeded in the knee joint; any other cut on the skin that allowed bacterial entry; entry of bacteria through the throat or respiratory tract into the blood!. These are usually Staphylococcal or Streptococcal infections!. One of the most common causes in older teenagers is Gonorrhea (usually sexually transmitted, and if this is seen in children one must always look for abuse)!. I suspect that the physicians have taken a sample of the fluid from the knee and are trying to grow the bug so that they can optimize their treatment!. As long as it is a common bug, they will not need to do any specialized testing, and it is quite likely that they may never know the exact cause!. If it is an uncommon bug, though, he may need a more rigorous work-up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
