Answers:
erythromycin and penicillin are antibiotics that kill bacteria and prevents their growth!. Your doctor chose it because you are allergic to penicillin!. The source below covers side effects, etc!. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, rash and itching!. Anything else is a side effect which can be just horrible - stomach pain, etc!. If what you have is a virus, neither drug will help!.

A penicillin allergy causes: Hives, Rash, Itchy skin, Wheezing, swollen lips, tongue or face (angioedema) Apparently anything else is a side effect!.

Only your druggist or your doctor would have the tools to figure out what else to try!. Sometimes it depends on other medications you are on, liver health, etc!.

I am allergic to penicillin, so my doctor has always prescribed something else; however, it has been too long for me to find out what it was!.

http://www!.allergynursing!.com/questions2!.!.!. really goes into it in depth and tells why you might be allergic to both and says what is allergy and what is side effect!.

They mention a drug intolerance test!. My allergist said it would be too dangerous to test to see if I am actually allergic to penicillin when there are so many antibiotics out there!. After reading the article, I know what I had was an true allergy!. It's why the truant officer gasped and stepped back when he saw me!. I hadn't looked into the mirror until then!. However, I was also on other stuff, so who can be sure!.

You may have to just tolerate the reactions or wait until the condition has run its course if it a virus!. To prevent getting sick, you need to wash your hands, not touch your eyes or nose with hands that haven't been washed, stay out of crowds during flu season - shop early or late, avoid sick people, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids, drink OJ or take vitamin C!. And everything else to keep yourself healthy!.

I hope you get better and stay healthy since you have already had something that needed penicillin as well as tonsillitis!.
