Like others have said - Oxycodone is generic for the brand "Percocet"!.
The cet at the end sigifying tylonol added, where percodan is aspirin!.
This is a synthetic opiod short term painkiller, and, at the dosage you are on, is used to treat moderate pain!.
Oxycontin is a sustained release opiod pain killer that is released continuously into the bloodstream thus the "contin" at the end - this is a much stronger medication than what you are taking, and is generally used to treat chronic pain that has been persistant for 6 months to a year!.
Percocet or Oxycodone, when taken as directed, is a safe and very effective pain reliever for mederate to severe pain!. It has side effects, but is given with prn (as needed - or every 4 - 6 hours ) dosage!.
A similar naming convention can be drawn with Vicodin - whose generic name is Hydrocodone!. They have similar effects on the brain with pain, but they just have different basic makeups!.
I am not a doctor - just someone who has been through Chronic knee, back, and cancer pain for many, many years and have had more sugeries than I care to remember!.
I hope this helps!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

OxyContin is a brand name for oxycodone, and Percocet is a brand name for oxycodone mixed with acetaminophen (tylenol)!.
It is an opiate derived drug, which means that there is some risk of addiction; however, if not intentionally abused, the likelihood of this is very small!.
The OxyContin that found it's way into popular culture as a heroin-type euphoria inducer is no longer available!. Individuals were chewing the coating off of OxyContin to get a quick high-concentrated dose to get stoned!. Nowadays, OxyContin is mixed with time-release inhibitors which make it nearly impossible to get a big pure dose, therefore making it hard to abuse the drug!.
*By the by, I am not a doctor, I just happen to know a bit about this!. I am not suggesting anyone adjust their dosage or take the risk of opiate addiction lightly!. Basically, doctors are the only ones qualified to give medical advice, and there's my disclaimer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
