How can I get a cast change?!

Question: How can I get a cast change!?
I have been in a full leg plaster cast for a month and when I went in yesterday for my appointment they told me I would have to wear it for another 4 weeks!. It smells awful, itches, is dirty at the foot and looks terrible but because it it still snug they wouldn't change it!. Any suggestions!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

A full leg cast is a crummy thing to have to deal with!. My son just had one this spring and it does get icky!. I'm kind of surprised they didn't give you a change!. Our orthopedic does cast changes every 3-4 weeks just so a skin infection doesn't develop!. The sweating and natural sloughing of the skin can be a breeding ground!. Did they give you an explanation for not changing it!?

If you "accidentally" get water down inside they will have to change it because it won't dry and can cause serious sores on the skin!.

Good luck to you and I hope the healing begins to speed up!. I know you are miserable!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi Terri,
As you are probably aware, Kim is in the hospital recovering from surgery which she had on Wednesday!. I am her boss and good friend and she has asked me to keep an eye on her e-mails and things!. Though I have not been in a cast before, I have had several friends in them!. A cast is supposed to hold the injured part of your body, in your case, your leg in a certain position while it is heeling!. Therefore, if you can prove that the cast isn't doing what it's supposed to, the doctor will change your cast!. One of my friends purposely damaged her cast because, like you, she wanted a pink one!. She did this by putting her foot in a bathtub filled with water for a few minutes!. The cast soon became soft and no-longer held her foot in the correct position!. When she went to her doctor, she said that she was at a friend's cottage, and fell into the lake, luckily another friend was there to help pull her out!. If you try this, be careful-here's hoping you get that pink cast!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I totally agree with the pink cast!. All of mine were pink and in the nice weather!. I had my toes matching the color of the cast and felt good about it!. From what I have learned, if the cast is snug and not damaged, it usually is left on!. I'm surprised that your Dr!. did not give you hell for it being dirty indicating that you may have tried to walk on it!. Did you request a change because of the dirty condition and odor!? Anyway, good luck, email me with questions or anything else!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Mine were changed about every three weeks because mine athropied quite quickly!. I would say that if yours is not atrophied that is a good sign, although I understand why you want a change!. Beside that, the only thing that I can suggest is a pedicure - it can do wonders to improve the appearance of your cast!. Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If they don't want to change it they won't as if the healing is occuring well and the fracture is in a good position it is important to leave it well alone!.

However, if it gets wet it would have to be changed!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

If your leg has neither shrunken or swollen in the cast, that is a very good thing!. Just spray it with some deodorant and cover it with a big sock!. You'll be out of it soon enough!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think no option check with your doctorWww@Answer-Health@Com
