Answers:
Sounds like he probably tore open his distal artery!. not good!.!.!.

You really, really, REALLY need to get him to an ER, NOW!

If you secretly call an ambulance, the EMTs and probably police that show up can usually persuade, if not force him (if they see a problem in his rationality), to go to the ER!.

Failing that, cover the area with cornstarch!. It should act as a type of stypic powder to help in clot!.

Always remember, when you have a blood soaked bandage on the wound, and you want to replace it, don't! Removing it can lead to the clotting becoming undone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If it won't stop on it's own he is going to have a major problem!. It doesn't seem like he's losing a lot of blood but he probably is and it can also be bleeding on the inside!. If he hit an artery it won't stop on it's own and needs a couple of stitches!. It sucks to go to the ER but unless you are going to stitch it up for him, he needs to suck it up and be a big boy and get his hand fixed!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Preparation
Step1
Scrub hands thoroughly with soap and disinfected water!.
Step2
Put on latex gloves to prevent the spread of infectious disease!.
Step3
Prepare a disinfectant solution of 1 oz!. povidone-iodine and 1 liter disinfected water!. See "How to Disinfect Water!." Set the disinfectant solution aside for about five minutes!.
Irrigation and Scrubbing
Step1
Do not remove the object that caused the puncture if it is still impaled in the wound!. See "How to Treat a Wound With an Impaled Object!."
Step2
If there is little bleeding, encourage bleeding by pressing lightly on the tissue on either side of the wound with a gloved hand!.
Step3
Scrub the area around the wound using a nailbrush and disinfectant solution!. Scrubbing may be painful to the injured person, but it is important that all debris is removed!.
Step4
Rinse a pair of tweezers thoroughly with disinfectant solution to sterilize them!.
Step5
Remove all large pieces of dirt, debris, dead skin and flakes of clotted blood from the wound!.
Step6
Draw the disinfectant solution into an irrigation syringe!.
Step7
Hold the syringe perpendicular to the wound, about 2 to 3 inches above it!. Angle the syringe and tilt the wound so that the solution will flood the wound and drain away from the opening!.
Step8
Press down on the plunger to emit a forceful stream of solution!.
Step9
Repeat the irrigation process, rinsing the wound for at least three to five minutes!. Puncture wounds are very difficult to clean, so repeat the irrigation process as many times as possible to give the wound a thorough cleaning!.
Step10
Rinse the wound liberally with disinfected water, because the disinfectant solution may cause irritation to the skin if left on!.
Step11
Check the clothing and area around the injured person to make sure his or her skin won't be exposed to disinfectant solution for a prolonged period of time, because this may cause burning!.
Step12
Bandage the wound immediately after it has been thoroughly cleansed of all debris!. See "How to Bandage a Wound During First Aid!."
Continued Care
Step1
Change the dressing and bandage, and monitor the wound daily for infection!. See "How to Evaluate a Wound for Infection!."
Step2
If there are any signs of infection, place a small piece of gauze inside the wound to prevent it from sealing and to allow pus to drain!. See "How to Treat an Infected Wound!."

Sounds like he needs stitches, but if he refuses to go!.!.!.do all that you have been doing, the pressure, elevation and add ICE to slow and possibly stop the bleeding!. Put the ice in a zip-lock baggie!. Apply it to the affected area 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off until the bleeding stops!.

One very real concern is infection!.

He really should go to the ER for evaluation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If the pressure and elevation does not slow down the bleeding, it means that he has opened a vessel!. This means he NEEDS stitches!. If he does not seek treatment, he is liable to get a very nasty infection that could spread!. Puncture wounds, even if treated, have a very high rate of infection!. So get your bf off his but and get him to the ER or urgent care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are types of puncture wounds that definitely require stitches!. If by chance a main vein has been punctured ----this will require medical attention!.

Elevation and pressure is the best thing to stop bleeding!.!.!. make sure he does NOT take any blood thinners like tylenol or ibuprofen or anything!.!.!. but if he cut an artery or vein he needs to get help !.!.!. by a doctor!. A normal cut on a normal person should take a max time of 1 hour to clot!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Wrap it in lots of towels or an old shirt that you dont need anymore!. If that dosent work, not a bit, go to the emergency room, explain to him* that he will probably lose lots of blood that way and die!. Good Luck!
