Is this a shin splint?!

Question: Is this a shin splint!?
I have just taken up hockey recently and have been learning to skate on the ice for about an hour a day every day, but today, I noticed a pain above my ancle kind of on the outside of my foot!. I ignored it and assumed I must have minorly twisted my ancle, but after my practice, It was way worse!. I have a sort of cramping pain on the outer top portion of my lower leg!. like a really tight muscle it hurts to massage it, but it also hurts when I hold my foot loose in some possitions!. do you know what this is!? since my first hockey game is a week away I really shouldn't lay of the practice unless I have to, but what do you think!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I got shin splints when I had to learn an Irish Jig for a pantomime that I was doing, 'ballet' shoes aren't exactly the most supportive during irish jigs!
Even so, it seems like other people have different ideas of what shin splints are!. Unlike the first poster, I never got pain in my calves, but it felt like I had LOADS of splinters in my shins (hence the name I'm guessing!)!.
Obviously, I couldn't stop dancing because of the performances, but doctors do recommend that you either slow down or stop your sport!.
But, to me, it doesn't sound like shin splints!.

To me, it sounds like your sprained it, or at worst, twisted the tendons in your foot!. Even though I say 'at worst' this can be really painful!! I think the best thing you can do, it go to your doctors, they might be able to give you some stronger pain killer, or a support for it!.
Otherwise, soak your feet in alternate hot and cold water, this should reduce and swelling, and the hot in particular should loosen all your muscles around the injury!.

Hope you feel better soon!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have shin splints!. If you run your hand up your leg you can actually feel bumps!.!.!.that way you will know if that's what you have!. I have never had trouble with my feet, just my calves!. The doc basically said to just stay off it when it acts up!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You should be able to ask your coach about this or someone else who can actually look at what is bothering you!. Without more info all I can say is
1) get some small cups, like dixie or gatorade cups!.
2) fill them halfway/ three-quarters of the way up and freeze
3) peel the cup down so the ice comes out a bit and use that to ice the area that hurts!. Just run it up and down the area for about 15 mins or until the ice runs out!.

If it really is a shin splint you can walk while pulling your toes towards your shin!. Basically walking on your heals while pulling your toes in the air!. This will strenghten the muscles in that area if you have shin splints!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
