Answers:
A lumbar puncture ("LP" = spinal tap) headache is caused by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaking after the procedure is over!. During an LP they would insert a needle in your back and then through openings in the bony covering of your spinal canal!. Then the needle would go through the fibrous covering of your spinal sac (this layer is called the "dura" or "dura mater") to get to the CSF!. They then analyze the CSF for signs of disease!.

Normally, the hole in the dura is small and it closes by itself!. However, if they use an old fashioned spinal needle or you just get unlucky, then you can have leaking afterwards!. The need for them to do it 3 times would increase your risk CSF leak substantially!.

The CSF serves to cushion your brain under normal circumstances so if it is leaking it will not do this job as well!.!.!.!.leading to the LP headache!. If the headache continues and is severe, they can treat the dural leak with a procedure called a "blood patch"!.!.!.basically take blood from your vein and inject it over the area where the leak is!.

The fact that you felt the needle during the procedure is not all that uncommon!. They use a local anesthetic and often don't completely anesthetize every area they will go through with the spinal needle!. Sounds like they had some difficulty with the LP so this is also more likely as they "explored" for the right spot/angle to get to your CSF!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

An LP migraine is a kind of headache that occurs after someone gets a spinal tap!. These kind of headaches can occur after a tap because of going too deep in to the spine!. Also, this can occur if they don't cover up the area where they took the fluid from well with something like a pressure dressing!.

As for not getting numb while they do the procedure that doesn't sound normal to me!. I would recommend getting in touch with your primary care physician to have them evaluate this situation further!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
