What helps soothe the pain of herpes?!

My dad swears by bicarbonate soda toothpaste when he gets a herpes outbreak!. In the UK we have an over the counter ointment ( no prescription required) called Zovirax which is great, active ingredient is Acyclovir (sometimes spelled Aciclovir)!. I use this myself, as when I get an outbreak it can be quite severe, and the quicker you use the ointment the quicker if stops it!.

Savlon might help, but as this is only an antiseptic, it woun't treat the virus, and I find that if I apply Savlon it only keeps it moist and it spreads further!.
