Oh wow!.
Ok, an ankle sprain has 3 degrees!. The first is a mild sprain!. There is some tenderness, and basically just stretches the ligament past it's normal range of motion!. Ligaments are what connect bone to bone, to keep them from moving!. The mild sprain usually heals in 3-6 weeks!. The second is a moderate sprain!. There is swelling, pain, and this time you've partially torn the ligament!. Healing can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks!. For a severe sprain, one or more of the ligaments have been completely torn!. Ligaments contain a ton of nerve endings, and that creates a lot of pain!. I've done this, and it hurts like you wouldn't believe!. Healing for this type of sprain can take from 6-12 weeks!. However, since your ligaments, like cartiledge, do not have a blood supply, the likelihood of a torn ligament healing is almost impossible, so if you've only torn one, you have to be careful not to tear the others!. And there is surgery to repair this, however, it will screw your ankle up for the rest of your life!. You don't need to have crutches, but it helps to keep pressure off of the ankle while it's healing, as well as keep you from tweaking it again and hurting it worse!.
I'm the poster child for sprains!.!.!.so a sprained ankle wasn't anything new for me!. However, back in 2004, I was running, stepped in a hole I didn't see, and rolled my right ankle!. I tore one ligament, the anterior talofibular ligament, completely, and tore most of my posterior talofibular ligament!. The posterior one connects the heel to the fibula, and the anterior one connects the fibula to the talus, the top bone in the foot!. My ankle swelled to the size of a softball, and it hurt like hell!. I was put in an aircast and had to ice it a lot to reduce the swelling!. I was also on crutches and was off sports and just about everything else for a good 8 months to allow it to heal as much as possible!. I now have to wear a brace on my ankle except for when I go to sleep, and I have to make sure that I have good running shoes, and that I run on flat, solid ground!. The bad part is that once the ligament tears, it's no longer being lubricated by the synovial fluid, and dries up to about the consistancy of a fingernail!. They don't go in and remove torn ligaments, so it just kinda hangs out there, and sometimes it can get caught in the bones and feel like gravel!. My ankle also pops a lot and is very painful, which is bad if I've got a lot of pressure on it-it hurts so bad that it just kind of gives out!.
It's important to take care of a sprain correctly immediately, because you don't want to further damage the ligament!. Sprains aren't really looked on as being serious, because they're really common!. But if you don't take care of it when it happens, it's not going to get better!. Even a mild one, if stretched enough, can cause some play in the joint, which is painful as well!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I fell up some stairs back in June (yes, I fell UP them) and sprained the crap out of my ankle!. The crutches aren't really for the pain, but to keep weight off of it while it heals!. It is very painful though; I've always heard it hurts less to break something than to sprain it!. Recovery took, like, three months!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
