Could be a soft tissue injury - was he running around or got rolled or played rough with another dog!?

Give it a few days, if he's still not favoring it then yes, an xray might need to be taken to make sure!. With dogs you can never tell, even putting weight on it does not mean it's not broken!. I had a vet take one look at my dog and tell me the leg isn't broken because she was putting weight on it [ an emergency vet] got back to my vet had it x-rayed only to find she had broken it!. Then years later she got rolled by another dog at the park, she wouldn't put any weight on the leg for 3 days, had it xrayed, no break only soft tissue injury, so it can be difficult to tell exactly what the problem is!.

It's always best to rule out a knee injury, some dog breeds are suseptible to luxating knee caps and running around or jumping can cause them to pop out!.

If the little guy isn't better in a few days 4 at most, I'd have him looked at just to be on the safe side!.

P!.S!. you might get better or more responses if you repost this to the dog section rather than the "human - injury section"Www@Answer-Health@Com

Take it to the vet,,, you won't get a decent answer here for a human medical question,, you're sure not going to get anything of value about an animalWww@Answer-Health@Com
