Is my doctor allowed to do this?!

Question: Is my doctor allowed to do this!?
I recently started seeing a new doctor and i want to back on the pill, but she told me she won't prescribe me any type of hormone contraception as she has seen some young women have bad side effects from them!. I explained to her that i was on the pill for 2 and a half years and never had any bad side effects, just the usual, put on a bit of weight, got a bit depressed, nothing major!. But when i explained this to her she just said she doesn't prescribe them to anyone because of her experience and also partly because of her religion!.

I am going to see a different doctor next week as i don't want to be off the pill any longer but i was just wondering if this is a normal thing for a doctor to do and is she allowed to refuse me contraception based on these reasons!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I totally agree with everybody's replies!. It's not illegal but totally unethical for this doctor to refuse to treat you ( by not prescribing the contraceptive is considered a refusal to treat) based on her personal feelings and her religion!. Her conscience and religion shouldn't come into play when she took the hippocratic oath( exception to deliberately kill or terminate life)

However, as recent state laws mandate( which btw, I think is totally ridiculous ; she could refuse if you are a minor and thus have to report to your parents!. I suspect this is not the case with you as you are already on the pill for 2 and 1/2 years!. Contraceptive pills are good for dysmenorrrhea or painful menstrual cramps and to regulate the periods!. Major side effects can be blood clots and possible breast cancer!.as well as the mood changes and weight gain that you mention!.

Therefore, you have every right to switch GP for this and any reason!. Remember whereas you have that right, the doctor doesn't have that right!. And if you want; you should report her to the Medical Board!.but I doubt it would do any good!. I haven't had any successful experience with them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi there,

Your doctor is letting her personal and religious beliefs interfere with her medical judgement!. She should not be taking into account her personal feelings when dealing with a case, simply her medical opinion and you personally!. She is not allowed to refuse you contraception based on her personal or religious beliefs and you are completely right to obtain advice from another doctor!. As you have been on the pill for the last two and a half years without side effects, she should be able to see that carrying on with this current course of contraceptive is unlikely to be a problem!.

I would ask to be removed from the surgery and register with another doctor!.

Hope it goes well :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is a strange issue, and one I have come across myself in Ireland (from an elderly male doctor who asked me why I wasn't having children at my age)!! I immediately changed doctors!.

If you are unhappy with what your GP has done, you can either report her, or just do as you are - go to another GP! If you want to go on the pill, and have had no problems in the past, then there is no reason that your doctor shouldn't prescribe contraception!. Her beliefs are hers, not yours!

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

No she can`t do that!. She can`t let her personal religious and ethical beliefs get in the way of patient care!. If she refused someone else contraception and they went back saying they wanted a termination because they were pregnant, I bet she`d refuse to have anything to do with that as well!. She`s in the wrong and needs to be reported as she`s not granting her patients the choices and preferences when there is no medical reason not to!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't thinks it's common for a Dr!. to do this but they certainly have the right to refuse to prescribe you medications or even see you as a pt!. for that matter!. Your already doing what I would do, which is find another MD that will be more mainstream and not treat you according to his or her religious beliefs!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

The GP that you saw was being ridiculous!. First she was using her past experiences and religious beliefs interfere with her job, and secondly plenty of people are already on the pill and people like Jeremy Kyle encourage people to take it!. I think what you are doing is right and that your doctor was acting oddly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Change your doctor and report this one!. Her religious beliefs have absolutely no place in the medical workplace and she should be made aware of this!. It is bang out of order for her to say this to you!.

Her superiors should be made aware she is letting personal beliefs get in the way of patient care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't think they are allowed to do this, no!. As long as you are healthy and don't have high blood pressure etc (basically no medical reason for being declined) she should have prescribed it for you instead of letting her personal religious beliefs and feelings get in the way!. i think she is wrong especialy her reason bing religeon if you had a ilness that would counteract it i could see her point i am afraid they are ggoing to have to give you them religeon or not as it stops unwanted pregnacies, that is what is wrong with the third world they dont have contraception and they are all starvingWww@Answer-Health@Com

she can have whatever views she wants!. and just like you're doing, if her patients don't agree, there's plenty more doctors out there!. there's no need to "report her" unless she's done something illegal to you!. i'm pretty sure choosing what drugs to prescribe is why they went to school!. just go see someone else if you don't agreeWww@Answer-Health@Com

Religious beliefs should not be accepted as a constructive answer!. You are wise to obtain advice from another doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes she can if she has discovered bad side effects even if you havn't encountered them yet, but not for the religious reasonsWww@Answer-Health@Com

should have nothing to do with religion!. medical reasons are understandable, c another doctor for their opinionWww@Answer-Health@Com

her religion is not ur religion - if she were my doc id report her, her private belief are her own and must not affect her work!.

sign up with a different doc and report herWww@Answer-Health@Com

i dont think so contact ur state medical lic board and inquire also see another drWww@Answer-Health@Com

You are doing the right thing by going to another Dr!. Also, you may want to think about reporting her to your state medical licensing board because HER religious beliefs aren't allowed to impact how she treats you!. Following her logic, does that mean she would refuse you a blood transfusion if you needed it and just let you die b/c it was against her religion!? I'd report her if you know for sure it was b/c of her religious beliefs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know if it's illegal, but it's unethical!. If a patient asks for birth control, a doctor should give it!. There are many laws in place to protect privacy and a persons right to take it!. I would get another doctor, like you already said, and talk to them about it!. Or at least report their behavior to the hospital they are working for!. She should not push her religious through medicine!. The hospital administration should step in on this!. If a under age girl come in and ask for birth control, this doctor would refuse, and the girl may not want her parents to know about it!. She could not simply find another doctor, without telling her parents why!. There are laws that keep a doctor from discussing family planning with the parents!. Report this, and let the board of the hospital deal with it!.
Also discuss different option with your new doctor!. If you had some depression in the past, a different kind of pill maybe better for you!. This is why it is important to "shop" for your family doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
