I know how you feel I have had the same problem since I was a kid too!.

I know it might sound silly but change your thought patterns if possible when my mind starts racing and I cant fall asleep I start with the alphabet use each letter as I go to identify my favorite thing for that letter for example A= Arizona then my mind is on the trip we had and it really takes my mind to pleasant thoughts ,,stress keep us awake so you have to fill your mind with something pleasant!. If you catch your self getting side tracked start over!. I have never gotten through the alphabet!. It is sort of like counting sheep which I always thought was too much work and it never worked for me!. Give it a try tonight!.

Try lavender in your room not candles but something like the reed diffusers!. The fragrance is well known to relax some people!.

A racing mind indicates a beta brainwave pattern!. To sleep, your brain needs to slow down from beta, through alpha, to theta, and perhaps delta!.

Weaning yourself off sugar and especially caffeine (instant beta!) will help, as will avoiding alcohol!.

Meditation will help, however for someone who hasn't meditated before it may require years of study and practice to calm the mind!.

Exercise can be a form of meditation for some, eg running!.

Another way to meditate is with brain wave entrainment!. You simply listen, with earphones, to a CD that helps your brain reach the alpha and theta states!.

There are several companies that provide CDs!. After researching for several months, I personally settled on Holosync, and have been very pleased with the results!.

You can sleep well and fall asleep almost instantly if you learn how to do it!. I learned about hypnosis a couple of years ago and you can get help online!. If you have the right mindset it's no problem to have the kind of behavior you have but it is great to be able to fall asleep when you want to!.
