Can someone please clarify what this MRI report means!. I am confused!?
Can anyone who knows about back problems or MRI's explain to me what this all means!.!.!.and list all the things that are wrong in stupid people language so i can understand it lol!. I am just overwhelmed with how much they found!. In general what does this mean!? Is this what is causing me so much pain!? do i have a herniated disc!?

6 lumbar type vertebrae are noted with the lower most lumbar vertebra labelled L6 on our study!. minimal grade I/IV spondylolisthesis of L6 over S1 is noted!.

At level L6-S1 level, grade I/IV spondylolytic spondylolisthesis of L6 over S1 is noted!. A small broadbased disc herniation is also present, associated with minor inferior extrusion of the disc material behind the S1 vertebral body!. Mild bony hypertrophy of the posterior faucet joints is also noted!. The above factors have all contributed to the moderate to marked narrowing of the right and left invertertebral foramina!. Mild degenerative changes are also noted at L6-S1, associated with disc space marrowing and decreased signal intensity!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

While the first answer is pretty correct, anatomy-wise, there's some comments I can add!.
Spondylolytic spondylolisthesis is a degenerative spinal disease (it's not contagious, but is hereditary)!. Basically it sounds like you have this, and it is causing your lower spine to degenerate!. Most people with this disease describe it as "it causes your spine to eventually fuse"!. I would request some pain killers, as there's no doubt in my mind you are in pain!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Vertebrae (aka vertebral body) -- these are the block like bones that make up your spine and are stacked on top of one another!. Between each pair of these blocks is a "cushion" -- the disc!. The discs function like shock absorbers!. They have a tough outer part and and soft central part -- kind of like a jelly donut!.

The spine is divided into different regions -- cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral!. Your MRI focused on the lumbar and sacral parts of the spine!.

"6 lumbar type vertebrae" -- basically means you have 1 extra lumbar (low back) vertebral body!. This is normal to have!.

"Minimal grade I/IV spondylolisthesis of L6 over S1" -- talking about lumbar vertebral body #6 and the one just below it which is sacral vertebral body #1 (between spine regions, the numbering starts over)!.

"grade I/IV spondylolisthesis" -- your L6 vertebral body is slightly out of alignment and not perfectly stacked up with the one just below it, S1!. It has migrated slightly forward!. 1 out of 4 is very mild!.

"small broadbased disc herniation is also present" -- the disc between L6 and S1 is sticking out!.

"with minor inferior extrusion of the disc material" -- and the disc's outer tough layer has a small tear through which some of its soft central part has leaked out -- jelly has escaped from the donut!

"Mild bony hypertrophy of the posterior faucet joints" -- these are the supporting bones of the spine and they are enlarged, happens with age but can be seen in young people who are very active or do lots of manual labor!.

"marked narrowing of the right and left invertertebral foramina" -- these are the openings through which your nerve roots leave the spine!. Yours are narrowed because of the enlarged facets and the disc problems (these structures are all very close to each other in the spine)!. Narrowing can cause nerve roots to be irritated resulting in back, thigh, leg pain etc!.

"Mild degenerative changes are also noted!.!." -- basically repeating the above!. The disc is narrowed (flatter really) as some of the "jelly" has leaked out!.

Hope that helps!

All the best, John H!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
