First Colonoscopy... any advice?!

Question: First Colonoscopy!.!.!. any advice!?
I am due for a colonoscopy in a few weeks, and I was wondering if you had it before and how it went for you!? was it painful!? Are you completely asleep!? Is the prep day is the same as for a barium enema or is it stronger!?

I had a barium enema last month and they did not find anything, but as I have family history, pain and weight lost (1stone and half without doing anything), the consultant want to do a colonoscopy and biopsy!.

What were the results for you!? How long did you have to wait for them!?

I know it is a lot of questions, but I am a bit worried about the procedure!. Thanks for your time!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi!. I'm an Endoscopy Nurse in WV!. The scope procedure is usually pretty scary for the patient but generally, when the patient is in recovery, they don't even realize the procedure has already been performed!. At our facility, we use Demerol and Versed!. The Demerol is for pain and the Versed is a sedative that provides the patient with an "amnesia" type experience!. You might call and question what type of medication they use at the facility you are going to!. I know some facilities will allow their patients to listen to music with earphones during the procedure!. In general, most patients are semi-asleep during the procedure!. They will awaken upon command and are able to answer when questioned, however, they are in a deep sleep!. Some places refer to this as "twilight sleep!." The results, for us, usually take between and week and two weeks to get back from the lab (if any biopsies were performed or tissue taken)!. Most results are back within a week, but don't be alarmed if it does take a little longer!. If the physician doesn't feel like tissue samples are necessary, they will be able to let you know that day as far as what they saw (i!.e!., diverticulitis, polyps, etc!.)!. Our prep for the colonoscopy is a little different from the barium prep!. For a colonoscopy, there are various different "preps"!. Most common is NPO (nothing by mouth) the day prior, along with an oral laxative (sometimes pills, sometimes a drink), and then a Fleets enema the morning of the procedure!. The goal is to have your "movements" as clear as possible prior to the procedure!. Hope this information is helpful in reducing your fears!. I know there are several websites you can go to and actually watch a scope as it is being performed!. One site is - www!.cc!.nih!.gov/drd/colonoscopy!. I wish you luck with your procedure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a colonoscopy 2 years ago as I had awful bowel pain, which was actualy the result of a large tumor & cyst on my ovary pressing into my bowel!. alls good now!.
They gave me an enemna which i found uncomfortable so if you can get a colonic the night before then not eat anything the morning of, you'll feel loads better as it clears you out & its less emabarrssing beleiev it or not!
they dont normally put you to sleep but i requested it as I heard there was slight pain with it!. if you really want to be put to sleep make sure you tell them, hospitals can be rubbish sometimes!.
afterwards you will feel drowsy & maybe have a bit of crap but thats from the air they put in you to open up your bowel!.
if you are a female, i would suggest seeing a gynacologost as sometimes probs with the bowel can be a symptom of gynae probs!.you must force your GP to refer you, other wise they will ignore it like they did with me!. if your never sure, just get everything checked out!. its your right!.
hope that helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
