Does anybody know the term for this?!

Question: Does anybody know the term for this!?
It's kind of hard to describe!. But I know it's called "something's" laugh or smile!. It is when you are in a situation (such as an argument) where something is NOT funny, but you are uncomfortable and all you can do is smile, when the appropriate reaction would be to get mad or cry!. You do this to cover up your feelings and it's completely involuntary, you want to be mad or sad, but all you can do is smile and or laugh!. It's quite embarrassing!. Thanks in advance!Www@Answer-Health@Com

My ex used to do this all the time and it was quite annoying!. Interesting question!. It was embarassing too when he would laugh or smile when the topic was about a death, or in the midst of a heated argument, or something where laughing or smiling was quite offensive!. People would ask me why he was laughing or smiling (inappropriately) and I would just explain that it was a "nervous laugh" and that he was not really laughing but just did not know what to say and was just awkward!. I had asked him about it myself on several occasions and he was helpless to be able to explain the behavior, and apparantly could not stop it!. It seemed to be a nervous tick and I found him embarassing to be with socially!. He did not make any effort to be aware of it or stop it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
