The nurse who already posted has the exact right of the situation!. A DNR stands for Do Not Resuscitate is NOT valid until the issue is actually about being resuscitated!. It does not come into play until the person is in cardiac arrest; in which case resuscitation is not attempted (i!.e!. CPR, defibrillation, etc!.)!. If you have a pulse, the DNR means nothing!.

If you have a stroke, or heart attack, it will most likely NOT cause you to go into cardiac arrest!. You always have the right to deny medical treatment, but you need to be aware of two things: 1) If the people treating you suspect you are not capable of making your own decisions (because you're unconscious or your mental state is altered, for instance) they may treat you anyway and 2) You might be in quite a lot of pain for quite a long time, and still not die from whatever is wrong!.

A DNR is a personal choice, but it isn't going to work the way you seem to think!. If I find a person who is not breathing, but has a pulse, then their DNR is worth nothing to me because it only covers cardiac arrest!. I still have to provide all the care that I can, and so does every other provider who finds you with a pulse!. And keep in mind, in some states, just knowing you have a DNR isn't enough - the physical papers must be provided before care can be denied!. If it isn't available, then medical personnel still may be obligated to attempt to revive you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Paramedics generally will go ahead and do life saving techniques and leave it up to the Drs!. at the hospital what to do next!. If they came upon a homeless person with no money at all they would still try to resuscitate and bring them to a hospital!. Lack of money is no reason to give up on life!. If you were dead, well sure you would have no bills, but if you lived, then if you just couldn't pay you couldn't pay!. So what!? Life on welfare is better than death!. Lots of people are plenty happy living on the dole!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think you are confused about what a DNR order is!.
If you have a DNR, that means that if your heart suddenly stops and you need CPR, nothing will be done!. (as an example)
A DNR order does not mean that medical personnel will just not treat you when you are ill or injured!.
It is about life-saving measures, not regular medical treatment!.
Do some serious research before you make this type of decision and have it done legally on paper!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not really, you have to be in the hospital and then they have to know of the paper work, a lot of it!. In fact some doctors may not want to treat you, you have to be taken at one issue at a time, not in general!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Wrong category to post this, but YES they have to obey the DNR!. My grandmother left like that!. I don't even think the EMTs would take you until your fully dead and call Time-of-Death!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you have a DNR and you are resuscutated you have a lawsuit! They HAVE to obey it! I work in a nursing home and deal with the residents rights!. One right is a DNR!Www@Answer-Health@Com
