Eye infections are never caused by a virus. Rather they are caused by bacteria. If the eye has goopy drainage it is probably an eye infection and she needs to see a doctor for an antibiotic prescription. It is important that she do this soon as some eye infections are contagious and if the drainage even gets on a towel others can catch it. An eye infection will not get better by itself. If it is red but no drainage she could try a warm moist washcloth over her eyes 2 or 3 times a day. If it does not improve in 3 days or eye drainage develops she needs the antibiotic from her doctor. This will also make her eyes more comfortable. If it is just a red spot on the eyelid it is probably a sty. That is treated with the same warm compresses.

When you get a stye(infected, clogged tear ducta) you can hold a compress of a washcloth rinsed in hot water and squeezed-out over it for a minute or two. Then repeat. This supposedly draws out the infection. It seems to work for me.
get some antibiotic eye drops.
Give her some penacillin
ask her to wear sun glasses and visit a doc asap
