Hiatus hernia, feels as if food is stuck in chest - what to do?!

Question: Hiatus hernia, feels as if food is stuck in chest - what to do?
Hi, I was diagnosed with a small hiatus hernia about 2 years after having trouble swallowing. I went back to the doctor a few weeks ago because food feels as if it's stuck sometimes, I was immediately booked for a endoscopy and nothing showed except my hernia and again it was described as small. Still food feels stuck, I chew well, sit down after my meals, but at night time if food is stuck I feel I could nearly bring on a panic attack as my chest gets tighter. What else should I be doing to help the discomfort and I would love to hear from anyone else who has this and I also need someone to say I shouldn't be panicking and that this is normal for a hernia (I hope :) Thanks anyone!

Answers:

Don't panic as stress can make a hiatus hernia feel worse, the symptoms you describe. Check your diet, don't eat anything too fatty, spicy or even too warm (as in hot). Eat slowly and a little and often might be of help rather than a full meal. Don't eat too late in the evening and after eating try sipping a little warm water, quickly got used to, which may help to relieve the feeling of over-fulness. Rather than eating a lot of red meat try more chicken and fish and try to take a glass of milk before your meal. I'm sure it has been explained to you that what you have is a little bit of the stomach going upwards into the oesophagus (the bit your food goes down) which feels as though food is stuck. Don't sit slouched when eating either but try to sit up straight. Hope this helps. Your GP should also be able to give you medicine to relieve the symptoms but try to help yourself first by eating sensibly.

Keep a food log. Write down what seems to bother you and what does not. Eat
frequently, but small amounts. My mother has this and often says yogurt seems
to help when she is bothered by the hernia. She also says small sips of warm water
help. Anything too acidic is bothersome to her. It also seems to act up when she is
anxious.
She found the food diary helped some.

Hi

I feel so sorry for you my mother suffers from this and boy does she suffer!! She barely can eat anything when she has to rush to the loo. She is in pain quite a lot and does get strange sensations like you mention so I think it is just to do with the hernia.

Just pray it doesnt get any bigger.

Try not eating late at night. Smaller portions are also better than stuffing yourself. Eat very slowly.
Good luck I too have the same symptoms, I also use Tums and other antacids.
