What is the best way to overcome shin splints?!

Question: What is the best way to overcome shin splints?
Have been running for a couple of months twice a week, try to do at least 3km each time so 6km altogether. But i get painful SP's in my left front calf (nothing on my right leg) which stops me from doing anymore, my fitness is pretty good but this inhibits me from being able to run long distance.
I have tried doing leg weights for a while, ice packs, proper stretching..
Have tried resting for a long time and doing other cardio training e.g. cycling, rowing.
Have noticed i also get them when i walk fast say when im late for work i get pains and what feels like a heart beat in my left calf post exercise.
Am considering taking tablets for it but not sure how effective they are...

Appreciate your feedback!

Rest and rest. No exercises what so ever. No cycling, rowing. Doctors are saying try 2 Tylenol and 1 Ibuprofen with plenty of food for pain. Have you ever analyzed your running technique? It might help you in avoiding getting those shin splints. If your about is out of alignment then it can effect your running. FYI. Shin splints can be a sign of a underlining disease such as diabetes. I worked for Navy Fitness.

Try adjusting your foot-strike, and gait, a little more to the bare-foot style, so shorter steps, and run more vertical(so stay upright a little more, instead of angled like a sprinter), and more of a mid-foot, fore-foot strike, it'll help utilize your bio-mechanics a lot better. Most shin-splints happen with tensed legs, and heel-strike.

You could also look into calf-sleeves, for some compression, depending on where you live(from 2XU, Zensah, CW-X, adidas PowerWeb are all really good).
