Hammer And Finger Dilemma?!

My dad hit his finger with a hammer whilst doing some building work (accidentally of course) and it's inflated. It's black, and his nail is a dark navy colour. It's warm (like his hand etc) and only pains him when pressure is applied. He pierced it with a hot needle the day after he did it, but it's not healing at all. Any help, advice, or information on what to do?
