Why do they tell you "don't close your eyes" when you get severel!

Question: Why do they tell you "don't close your eyes" when you get severely injured?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I was playing a detective game and the main character got knocked out from someone hitting his head really hard. Then his partner told him not to close his eyes and to stay with her. What is the reason behind not closing your eyes when you get really injured? Is it something that has to do with staying conscious?

YES. When someone sustains a serious head injury, they tend to want to pass out and keeping them awake helps keep their autonomic nervous system from shutting down. It really does make a difference in the clinical outcome.

Well, if you recived at blow to the head they tell you not to close your eyes because yes, you tend to want to fall asleep and that could lead to a coma. Unless your in the hospital, they want to keep you awake.

Personal exsperiance: I've had a minor concussion before
