Appendix removal question?!

Question: Appendix removal question?
I heard a friend got her tonsils removed yesterday and her appendix is being taken out today. It nearly burst (but far as I know didn't). I don't know what form of surgery she's getting (the one with small incisions or the one large one) but could anyone tell me how long she'll have to stay at the hospital, and how long it will be after that until she will be able to care for herself again.

I know recovery time varies on which form she got, so please list it for both if you know. I can't seem to find the answer online.

Oh, and she's only in her early 20s and at least pretty healthy.

Answers:

These generalization!. It depends how sick she was before she had surgery. If she had a seveer infection they will keep her in the hospital until her fever is down and the doctors are sure that the infection has cleared her body. Secondary infections can occur rarely, called septicemia. If she cannot eat the doctors will not send her home until she is ready. Average time is about two nights but it can be longer.

Nursing Degree

The incision size often depends on the situation and the surgeon doing it. It's hard to predict.

It's equally harder to predict how long she'll be in hospital.

We aren't trained in the medical field. Even if we were, we would have no access to her records, be able to examine her, etc. No one can answer this for you. You'll just have to see how she's doing after surgery.

Her doctors and nurses will be able to give her an idea of what to expect but it's up to her body to heal...and we all heal at different rates.

If the appendix was about to burst then it could also have a gangrene infection and she could be in hospital for about a week and then will need bed rest (at home) for about 4 weeks. My sister had the same problem in her twenties and she nearly died before the doctor was called who then rushed her to emergency hospital.

when i had my appendix out i went to the emergency room on a thursday night had it out on a friday night then left early sunday morning. i had to stay longer then most because i could not eat after. the first week is bad but after 2 weeks she should be a lot better. at 3 to 4 weeks you are 100 percent again.

She will probably be in the hospital 1-2 nights. She should be able to take care of herself when she gets home, but will need to take it easy for about 2 weeks.

I am a RN, BSN

I has a very small incision about 2 inches long. It took me 2 days to get out of the hospital and 2 weeks before the pain was fully gone.
