It's possible that the bruises can be from sitting too long. In hospitals, we need to make the patients move around as much (I worked in an old folks home), because they can develop bedsores, which start off looking like little red bruises, and then eventually the skin breaks down, turns purple and can become a hole if you're not careful.
You know how when you sit down too long, and your butt goes red? Or if you cross your legs for a while, you get a red mark where your legs were touching? It's the same thing, only a healthy person will get up and it will go away once the pressure is gone. If someone is sitting or lying down for long periods of time, these can get very extreme. We don't get these in our sleep because we turn over and shift all the time, it's easy for us. I'm guessing that since your mom has multiple sclerosis, she has a hard time moving around and is much more prone to this sort of damage.
Bedsores are the number 2 priority in a hospital (right after administering meds) because they are SO common. On every floor I've ever worked on, there are at least 3 bed sores.
