You don't give his age and 'growing pains' are a bit of a myth rather than a medical entity. I would start by taking him to your GP to get a proper diagnosis.

is he walking "bowed" legged, if he is you should make him an apt.
alot of ice and heat, if it bugs him too much, i would talk to a doc about JRA and make sure he dont have it,

I went through that (ouch). I think I used to wrap them with an ACE bandage, and sometimes ice them down.
