Why does an underactive thyroid cause weight gain?!

Question: Why does an underactive thyroid cause weight gain?
If the person is a healthy eater and exercises a lot?

Answers:

Because the thyroid hormone controls cell metabolism. Basically your body slows right down and therefore burns fewer calories. Weight gain isn't always a symptom of under active thyroid, but it is a common symptom.

This is assuming you are not on medication for it. If you are on medication, then your body is effectively normal as the meds make up for the thyroid function deficiency. Weight gain in that case has some other cause.

It sometimes is a side effect of the medicine the Doctor gives you for it! Ask the Doctor if there isn't another(different) medication he can give you that won't cause you to gain weight, If not maybe he can give you some kind of diet besides what your doing yourself like less Carbs and more Fiber, certain exercise, what ever, maybe talk to a Nutritionist. Try everything!, I know how you feel, Never stop trying do what it takes and hang in there, there is an answer!! Just because you have one illness, that shouldn't take away something else from you and keep you from being the happiest you can be!! Good Luck! (giving up is not in you vocabulary) remember that!! be happy!!

Either they are eating too much or their medication is causing water retention. (I am assuming that they are not developing a significant amount of extra muscle mass).

Medicating thyroid problems is difficult, because the amount addition hormones needed varies throughout the day and from day to day.

dont you get spam emails about underactive thyroid also? i know i am.
but yeah it can cause weight gain, make an apt.

Are you taking medications for your thyroid?

There you go!
