Why do people say to drink ginger ale and eat crackers, soup, or toast when you&!

Question: Why do people say to drink ginger ale and eat crackers, soup, or toast when you're sick?
What makes these better than other foods or drinks?

Why ginger ale over something like juice, or water?

I understand that crackers and toast are considered "light" on the stomach, but why?

And why soup? Soup doesn't seem very "light" on the stomach.

Answers:

Chicken broth contains a combination of salt and protein and water that is good for keeping hydrated. A few noodles are simple carbs that are easy to digest.

Ginger ale is partly a mythical cure because of the belief that ginger is good for digestion. Where it is or not, modern ginger ale contains almost no ginger.

Ginger ale contains sugar, which is helpful for someone who is not eating, and it does not contain caffeine. Caffeine irritates your stomach and causes your intestines to contract more, making diarrhea worse. Sprite is also good for the same reason: sugar with no caffiene. Caffeine free cola is not a great choice because the cola flavoring comes partly from extra acids that are put into the soda, which will irritate your stomach.

Orange juice is more acidic that ginger ale and thus more irritating. If you dilute organge juce with a little water (2 parts juice to one part water) with some added sugar, that is fine for someone who is sick. Apple juice is suitable.

People attach mystical properties to the bubbles in ginger ale. If the bubbles comfort you, then go for it, but there is no real medical advantage to carbonation.

Ginger is known to help settle an upset stomach. They say "soup" but mean one that is mostly broth ....not a cream based soup or one with lots of meat. Toast and crackers are easily digested. Your body, tho sick, still needs calories to keep running well and to make you better.

Ginger ale has bubbles and sugar that makes you feel alittle better. Gives you energy. Soup just relaxes the body makes you relax. Toast and crackers doo make it light on you stomach if you eat something heavy it will just make u want to throwup
