Have I fractured my scaphiod bone?!

Question: Have I fractured my scaphiod bone?
Well last Thursday I was doing gymnastics and did a back flip, however my arm gave way and I landed on an outstretched wrist. I went for an X-ray and was told all was fine I'd just badly sprained my wrist. It's now Tuesday evening and it's killing like hell. I hear a clicking noise when I move it in a circle and hurts when I tap the area (under thumb heading down to the radius bone) very tender. Is it possible I have fractured it or is it like they said, sprained? ps... I have a little swelling but not a lot

Answers:

Sometimes,if the fracture is very small or in an awkward position (or if it's a hairline crack), it can take a couple of days to show on an Xray.
On the other hand, a sprained ankle can be very painful and swollen, without being broken or cracked (and from your description it sure sounds like it).
do you put compressions on it? a bandage? elevate it?

take some painkillers, do move your palm within pain limits (i.e.- move it until the point it starts hurting and then bring it back), and if the pain persists go see your doctor again.

Get well soon :)

I'm an A&E (ER) nurse.

Suspected scaphoid fractures, which can occur via exactly the injury you describe, should be X rayed at the time and then ALWAYS immobilised and re x rayed after 2 weeks as the fracture is often not visible initially. Go back to A+E.
