Going through the exact same thing at the moment. It is really frustrating. You initially need to rest it (like the first 72 hours) but then you need to start working it. Trying to completely stay off it and immobilize it is an old wives tale. If you do that it won't heal correctly and can do anything from making it prone to happen again and again to even needing surgery if the ligaments shrink up.

I got a really good brace, you can find them at medical supply stores or sporting goods stores, it is lace up but also have nylon straps for support, I am using that to walk, but I am going with a light ace wrap type brace or nothing at all for around the house. I am 2 weeks into it and am now doing several exercises a few times daily to strengthen it back up.

The first one and very important is to take a towel and loop it around your toes and pull back on it to stretch out your achilles tendon, if you don't do this it will tend to make your entire leg weak. Others include writing the alphabet with your toes, pointing and flexing your toes and finding a strair to do toe rises and heal drops, also walking on your toes and then your heals when you are ready. You can take Advil and continue to ice when it hurts. I know how much fun it is and sadly ankle injuries take several weeks to heal and will only do so if you commit to rehabbing it. Good Luck!

My own ankle injury, doctors advice and I too am a Paramedic.

Wrap your ankle with a tensor bandage starting at your toes and work up your foot/ankle. This will give you some stability and help you get around during the day. Take off the bandage at night and don't get it wet. You can take ibuprofen for the pain. Sprained ankles suck, but there isn't a lot you can do for them. They just need time to heal. You're going to be limping around for a while.

I'm a Paramedic

You need a good functinal orthotic - custom orthotics are best. You also need to have physical therapy to strengthen your ankle. If you have continued pain, then you should get an MRI which will show if there is a ligament tear. Xrays just show bone and unless you have a fracture will not be helpful other than showing your foot type (xrays should always be weightbearing or taken while you are standing not sitting).

Go to an orthopedic doctor and they will do x-rays. Until then, wrap it up in an ace bandage, ice it for 15-20 minutes at least 2 times a day and take ibuprofen. Try to stay off of it as much as possible and maybe use crutches. Good luck!!!!! :)
