Pain management what do I ask?!

Question: Pain management what do I ask?
My general dr sent out a note that she won't be prescribing opiates at her office to anyone anymore and said to seek pain management elsewhere. I called the list of Drs in town and no one is taking patients. I'm left with pain clinic option. I'm 33 f perforated L4/L5 disc, spinal stenosis, and in active physical therapy, where I have discovered to have scoliosis also. I have my dr records, MRI reports and phys therapy and neurological assessment no bad marks on my record. I went to call the only pain clinic 30 miles away, they are closed for 2 weeks. I run out of rx in 2 weeks. I looked up another one. 40 miles away and am going to give them a call. I just don't know the questions to ask the lady on the phone. Nervous about the whole thing. Never been to a pain clinic and ice been dealing with hostile receptionists the past few weeks, putting my medical record together.. Any help please? For someone who has been there done that?

Hi.Well, did your doctor give you a referral to see a pain management doctor/clinic? Just here where I live(NYC) we have to have a referral to see a specialist.Might be different where you live.But,anyways...what is it that you need to know specifically? I mean..what is it that you want to ask that pain clinic? Basically when you go to your first appointment..the pain doctor will have read over your medical records ahead of time,at least they should have. And,your doctor(at pain clinic) should already have an understanding of what's going on with you,and your medical needs. And,also your doctor will ask you about what pain medications you've taken before, and what pain medications worked best for your kind of pain. And,with the way these pain clinics are going now? They are getting pretty tight with they way their handing out pain medications...but as long as you've a good medical reason for the need? Then you should have no problem.I suggest that if you happen to run out of your pain medications before you can see a pain doctor..since you've mentioned you only have 2 weks worth? You should go to the nearest er if you must, but if you can hold out until your first appointment..even better.Just relax..I've been where your at now,and it's nothing to worry yourself about. It's basically the same thing as going to a regular doctor, and you should never feel imtimidated by any doctor...ever.Those doctors at the pain clinic are there for a reason...to do their job,and nothing more, and nothing less.Your a patient, and you deserve to be treated with respect, and that's the attitude you need to aquire. But,of course don't get ahead of yourself if you know what I mean...but I'm sure you get my point.I wouldn't make any more phone calls to the pain clinic. They will call you when your appointment is made...you ask the same questions as you would any other doctors office.Period.No real difference between the two. And,even if you were to speak with the receptionist? She wouldn't have the answers your looking for...her job is basically answering the phones, making appointments, cancelling appointments,billing/coding,filing and so forth. She wouldn't be able to put your mind at ease...and,also..she's extremely busy, and would be a little rude..as you said.Trust me...everything will be fine...Ok? You have nothing to worry about..this pain clinic is just like any other doctors office. No difference between the two.Ok? I wish you all the best and I hope everything works out for you...relax.Ok? Take care.

Try finding a neurologist they can prescribe you something and can probably treat your problems with surgery. For the questions, meet them in person by setting up an appointment and then talk directly with someone.

I dont think I would be going back to that doc for anything is she just announced this and didnt offer to atleast give one refill until you can get in at another doctor. A pain clinic will much better suit your needs than a general practice doctor will anyway. They will be able to try different meds that you didnt even know about (there are actually many medications that are used for other things that can also treat pain besides the good ole perc....codene, etc) I would explain to them that you need to be seen in the next two weeks and express your anxiety over the situation.....exlain to them that you know it is not their problem and you hope they can help you.

I have the same problem, I've been in horrible pain for weeks with my lower back and the drop in clinic I went to won't prescribe anything. He just told me to use voltaren gel and tylenol.

My regular doctor is so booked up I can't get in. I'm hoping I can get an appointment soon because I'm struggling to work a sit down job.

Go to whoever can take you, the most important thing is you need to get this resolved. Can you see if your old doctor will give you a refill until you can find someone?

The trouble is the pills aren't getting rid of the pain nor is the p.t. you are having and that's because the pain is caused by pinched muscles in your back. It's having any type of tight muscle in your back that would make it grow out of it's regular path to cause the scoliosis as well. You have to free up your back muscles to get rid of the pains and to get a lot of relief to the disc for it's the tight muscles putting the pressure on the vertebrae to cause the disc failure. Here's how to free up your back muscles for your relief:
Back:
(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
