ankle pain, can anyone help?!

Question: Ankle pain, can anyone help?
Hi there, just wondering if anyone can help. I went over on my ankle 10 days ago, it was sore at the time and then niggled a bit for the next week. In the last 3 days I have had shooting pain when I go upstairs or up a hill. It is painful around the area of my ankle bone. even at rest my ankle is constantly throbbing. I have an ankle support on it, and an appointment with the doctor for next week. i have started to take mild painkillers. It sometimes feels like it might just give way.
Does anyone have any suggestions on exercises which might help, or what I might have done?
My ankle has been a bit weak for years since i went over on it at a ceilidh, but this pain is getting quite bad.
Thank you.

Answers:

The fact your ankle has been weak for a long time would suggest that this accident might have disturbed an old issue. In which case, you have made the correct decision in making an appointment with the doctor.

Provided you are not taking any contra-indicating medication (check the leaflets if you are unsure), I would recommend a non steroidal anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen. Ibuprofen will reduce the swelling in the ankle and bring down the pain too. Should the pain still "breakthrough", you can take some paracetamol two hours after the ibuprofen (up to four times a day to a maximum of 4g in total).

Try to take the weight off your ankle as much as possible as you are already doing and try to build up a history (of your ankle problems) as complete as possible for when you visit your doctor.
