Pain in hip when bending over?!

Question: Pain in hip when bending over?
Hi everyone,

This has been going on for... I don't know, a few months but in the last few days it has gotten a lot worse. When I bend over (especially to pick something heavy up) my hip starts to hurt. It's always the left side and in the same place. I work with horses and it's most common when I pick out my horses feet. (If you want to see the position of someone when they pick out a horses feet you can probably google it) It also hurts if I pick weeds or something. When I'm walking it's totally fine - I don't feel the pain until I bend over. I can jump up and down and it won't hurt.

Recently sitting down has been hurting it too, but sitting usually doesn't. I can't remember any injury to my hip but it's possible that I did. I get hurt and usually forget about it.

I'm a 17 year old female if that makes any difference....

Popping the hip relieves the pain, but I have a hard time getting my hips to pop. Any answers would be appreciated. I do want to to see the doctor if this doesn't get any better.

So, just to help you out:

*It doesn't hurt if I'm standing up, walking, or laying down
*It hurts when I bend over - especially to pick something heavy up. I don't feel the pain until after I stand up. It doesn't hurt when I'm actually bending over.
*Sitting hasn't been a problem until the last few days.

Answers:

It could just be wear and tear, but:

The hip is a ball and socket joint, so whenever you move it (bending down in particular), it rotates and usually causes no harm. However, sometimes, particularly with repeated activity such as bending down to work with the horses, there can be a small tear in the labrum, the layer of cartilage between the ball and socket. If there is a rough part of the hip bone, rotation will wear away further at the labrum. This type of injury is more common with older people than you, but is also common in young athletes.

You can get injections to ease the pain, but if the above is the case, an orthopaedic surgeon may recommend you have a hip arthroscopy, a keyhole operation in which damaged tissue can be repaired and jagged bone filed down. (It's done under a general anaesthetic but is perfectly routine).

You would most likely need an MR scan to confirm this first though, so I would get it scanned to be on the safe side.

PS. I would have thought that the reason jumping/walking/standing does not hurt is because the hip is only rotating minimally within the socket.

*I am not a doctor, but have spent several attachments with orthopaedic surgeons and have seen the same symptoms, as well as the above procedure performed in theatre. Therefore don't accept my answer as an attempted diagnosis - you need a consultation with a specialist really, but hopefully it helps to give you something to look into :) *

maybe ur just sored, stop doing that horse thing u do for a while & see if it stops hurting p.s. don't ride horses!! a girl's body is very sensitive & can easily get hurt always remember that!!
