The effect of being low on Vitamin B12?!

Question: The effect of being low on Vitamin B12?
I've had a blood test and it showed that I was really low on vitamin B12. So now I'm taking supplements three times a day.
I was just wondering if anybody knew what vitamin B12 is needed for? Can being low on it damage your body in any way? What effect does being low on vitamin B12 have?
Thank you for any answers.

Answers:

Some friends of mine, vegetarians/vegans who didn't get enough of B12 started to get numb in either legs or arms and had to go to the hospital. B12 is important for the function of the nerves and the brain. Very low B12 intakes can cause anemia and nervous system damage. A good natural source of B12 is liver, or meat or eggs if one doesn't like liver.
