The left side of my jaw is locked..?!

Question: The left side of my jaw is locked..?
during the last few years, every now and then the left side of my jaw would lock up for a minute or two but then go away. i've had my braces off for over a year now and suddenly the other morning, i woke up with my jaw locked. with the exception of a couple of seconds or normality, the left side of my jaw is always locked.
this is the 3rd day this has been going on, and it doesn't seem to be getting better. any ideas of what this could mean? idk anything about TMJ really but a couple people have said that's what it is...does it require surgery? wat's going on? lol

Answers:

TMJ just refers to dysfunction in the joint. If you had rubberbands or headgear, you are more likely to have it. Do you wear a retainer when you sleep? If you are or not, you can go to a dentist and get a custom mouthguard. It may cost around $500. It will protect your teeth from grinding and/or clenching. I think TMJ sufferers tend to clench. Some people/doctors try to say that TMJ is stress related. I don't buy that, I think it is more common in people who have had braces. Good Luck.
