It is allowed to the max of 1200 mg (= 3 tablets) per day and one tablet (400 mg) works for about 4 to 8 hours.
On doctors prescription is is allowed to take max 3200 mg = 8 tablets

What size ibuprofen? The over-the-counter type (Advil, Motrin, store brand) are typically 200mg. Taking 4 of them at once would bring you up to the prescription dose of 800mg, which you can take every 8 hours. So although nothing is 100% safe (heck, you could choke on the next piece of food you eat), it's about as safe as you can be.
