Did my chiropractor make my back worse?!

Question: Did my chiropractor make my back worse?
For years I have been dealing with choronic back pain. At age 21 I was laid up in bed for over a day. So at age 28 I decided enough was enough. The massages weren't helping (felt like someone was torturing me) so I headed to the chiropractor. I've been on muscle relaxers since I was 19. I started my first vist this past december and after 3 visits a muscle in my neck literally tore. All I did was stretch, and the kind for excercise!! I woke up and started to stretch and RIP!! A week later I reached for my tooth brush and my middle back muscles tore. The sound was the same- like someone tearing a piece of paper. My whole back literally feels like someone set it on fire. My doctors say heat-my chiropractor says ice- my massage therapist says oils. I just want the pain to go away. The only thing that makes it happen is a muscle relaxer mixed with flexirl. I'm not doing ANY heavy lifting or weird activity. I just go to school for 2-3 hr a day. That's it. Why all this muscle pulling all of a sudden? Is it something my chiropractor did??

Answers:

I would stop going to the massage therapist and chiropractor and instead go to my doctor. He may refer you to an Orthopedist who specializes in backs. It sounds like your muscles are tight and there are things the doctor can do to help with the pain. Trigger point injections are one option and they do not hurt. I've had them myself.
You mentioned taking a muscle relaxer with Flexeril. You probably already know this but Flexeril is a muscle relaxer.
I can't say if it's anything your Chiropractor did because I don't know what he has done. I will say to go to your doctor, tell him the problems you are having, and if necessary ask for a referral. As for the ice or heat debate, it's usually a good idea to use both. Ice for a while and then the next time some heat. Ice will relieve any inflammation in your back. Heat will help relax the muscles. Oils will only make you greasy.
