Pain in shin? What should I do?!

Question: Pain in shin? What should I do?
I'm 19 years old. I used to go running. I'm experiencing pain in my shin. It hurts to touch it or have water hit it when I'm in the shower. It hurts to stand or walk on it. What should I do? What did I do to it?

Answers:

Celina, please try this movement to see if it helps you. Assume a long sitting position on the floor. Keep the knees straight and have the muscles of the feet pull the feet back towards the shins. The only movement that is taking place is at the ankles and you will know that it is working as there will be a pulling sensation in the calves. Hold that pull for 10 seconds and then rest for 5 seconds. Repeat that cycle until you have done 10 cycles. Do this at least twice a day and it should clear.

It sounds like you might have a shin splint. If you are doing any running take a break. If the condition is very recent, 1-2 days, you can ice it and elevate it. If it has been a few days, heat and massage are very helpful. Make sure your shoes are a good fit and that you do stretching before you run. This is basically a tendinitis issue. If it doesn't improve in a day or two, go to the doctor. It sounds pretty bad if water in the shower bothers it too. Good Luck.
