Achilles Tendon or Calcanus problem?!

Question: Achilles Tendon or Calcanus problem?
So last summer I hurt my achilles while jogging and probably also from using an eliptical at high settings. Never saw a doc for it, I've spent a lot of time off of it and such but I can't seem to jog at 6.5 MPH for more than 10 minutes before my lower achilles toward the calcanus starts to hurt and I have to stop so I don't re-aggravate it. It's been over 6 months so you would think it'd be healed by now. I've also started taking Melatonin for over a month but my problems flare up still. Any advice you can give me? If I go to a basic clinic are they going to just recommend I go to a specialist? Don't have the money for that.

Answers:

Yes, a walk-in clinic will just recommend that you see a Foot and Ankle doc.

Most likely you have developed a chronic irritation of your Achilles Tendon/Plantar Faciitis complex. I have the same thing. I had an acute issue over 2 years ago, and now it acts up if I don't keep up with my "program."
*wearing supportive shoes with arch supports at all times; walking barefoot is a big no-no
*stretching
*wearing a night splint if I start to ache during the day. I admit I don't wear it consistently anymore, but I did wear it for a year everynight, and it does truly help. There are a lot of different types out there, including some really cheap ones that don't do jack. I have a sturdy one that's well padded, and really comfortable.

*I also bought myself a walking cast boot (out of pocket, I admit). But it was a lifesaver. For days when my foot just is on fire, I put it on in the evening when I get home from work, and my foot *instantly* feels better.

Taking NSAIDs for a few days can also help calm things down. Advil, for the inflammation, not Tylenol, which doesn't work on inflammation.

Hopefully, these tips will help. and You'll be able to up your work-out again after a while.

I went to a specialist and they gave me inserts to wear in my shoes for a few months. Solved the problem.
