Answers:

The last thing on your trigger list is the best case for other triggers; most people who have migraines also have allergies to many other things. It also indicates you might be straining your neck at night when you're congested - more on that below.

I've had them since I was young as well, and I'm 51 now. Of course I've found out most of my triggers over the years, and though many of them are allergy related (MSG, red wines, certain cheeses, etc.), occasionally I'll come across something new that triggers one and I learn to avoid it. Remember as we grow older, our sensitivities change.

The key to dealing with migraines is to find out what most or all of your triggers are, e.g., what food, drink, environment, allergen, etc., will trigger them. Low pressure weather systems are a killer for me and others I know who have similar problems, which is one reason I hate winter and thunderstorms in the summer. Air pollution and stress are other triggers; since many people are indoors during the winter, the dirtier environment (heaters, fireplace smoke, dust, etc.) and stress of not being able to go outdoors affect migraines. Since you have allergies, or are prone to sinus headaches, they can also trigger migraines.

Another thing to think about is when you're having any problems breathing, either nasal stuffiness or asthma. When we have difficulty breathing when sleeping, we involuntarily tend to tilt our head back to open the airway further to bring in more oxygen through mouth. It's similar to what you'd do to a patient prior to performing CPR in tilting the head back to open the airway. The resulting neck stress and tension for several hours often gives you a headache along with a stiff neck. With my own asthma and allergies, it still happens to me on occasion, even though I know about it and do everything to avoid it.

There is no easy way to determine what your triggers are; it is simply a process of keeping a diary and narrowing them down until you figure them out, then avoid them if at all possible.

When tracking down your triggers, consider everything in the few hours prior to the migraine; what you ate, drank, hygiene products or meds you may have taken, where you were, animals you may have come in contact with, etc. If you can track it to a specific item, note the ingredients, as may be just one additive that's causing it (e.g., MSG).

Most so-called migraine headaches are really tension headaches. True migraine headaches are often associated with nausea or vomiting and are preceded by seeing flashes of light or "stars." They are caused by the tightening and then relaxing of blood vessels in the head. True migraine headaches occur on only one side of the head during any particular attack.
The symptoms of migraine headaches can occur in various combinations and include:

Moderate to severe pain (often described as pounding, throbbing pain) that can affect whole head, or can shift from one side of the head to the other.

Sensitivity to light, noise or odors.

Blurred vision.

Nausea or vomiting, stomach upset, abdominal pain.

Loss of appetite.

Sensations of being very warm or cold.

Paleness.

Fatigue.

Dizziness.

Fever (rare).

Bright flashing dots or lights, blind spots, wavy or jagged lines (Aura).

I hope this helps you. And good luck.

Causes unknown.

Other triggers are: MSG, aspartame, processed meats, red wine, aged cheddar cheese, strong odors, irregular sleep patterns, weather changes, caffeine, and I know there are more that I am just not thinking of.

Blessings
