A question about sprained ankle?!

Question: A question about sprained ankle?
Last saturday I hurt my ankle and went to the hospital. The doctor at the hospital said that it was fractured and put a splint on my ankle. 4 days later I went to the orthopedic and he told me that it wasn't fractured, but really badly sprained. He has me wearing an aircast now. My question is, could the orthopedic possibly be wrong? because my whole foot is badly bruised and still swollen. I can walk on it a little, but there is a little pain. I still use the crutches a little. How long should it be until i can take the aircast off? My orthopedic didn't really tell me much.

Answers:

To reduce swelling (can cause pain) in the ankle you can do this:

Raise foot above your hear (lay down and put pillow under it or something of that matter)

Ice on 10 mins

Ice off 10 mins
(you can do this for 20 to 30 minutes if you want, I usually do 10)

(repeat as necessary)

Here are some sprain grades, even though you might believe its broken, your orthopedic is most likely correct, sense he specializes in that specific area.

Grade 1 sprain:

Slight stretching and some damage to the fibers (fibrils) of the ligament.

Grade 2 sprain:

Partial tearing of the ligament. If the ankle joint is examined and moved in certain ways, abnormal looseness of the ankle joint occurs.

Grade 3 sprain:

Complete tear of the ligament. If the examiner pulls or pushes on the ankle joint in certain movements, gross instability occurs.

You most likely have a grade 2 sprain because those are most commonly treated with splints Grade 3 usually need a short leg cast or a cast-brace.

nope the orthopedic is mostly likely not wrong very small chance he is wrong. in the hospital it is very rushed and they do not take that much time to read the xrays and are not specialized in bones. sprains would bruise and swell more so thats normal. ice and elevate. you probably need the air cast for 2 to 3 weeks.
