Question: How to break an ankle?

In a story im writing my character "Lars" breaks an ankle what are some realistic ways he could break it?

Incase it helps he has a two story house and has a pool, its winter, and he is athletic. Thanks in advance.

Answers:

He could fall in his house, he could slip on ice if it's winter, if the pool is drained/empty for winter he could certainly slip into it and land on his ankle. Or if he's athletic maybe it's a team sport injury. Sometimes you don't have to try hard to break an ankle, it can be all in how you land on it.
