Hockey skates cause very numb foot.. blood clot?!

Question: Hockey skates cause very numb foot.. blood clot?
I had to ref 4 hockey games yesterday, and I had my skates on for about 6.5 hours straight. I tie my skates relatively tight (like most people do). By the last game my right food was hurting, it was almost a burning sensation. When I finally was able to take off the skates, the side of my right foot was very, very numb. It has been about a day and my foot has that 'pins and needles' feeling. It isn't quite numb, but it is very tingly. Is this something I should be worried about? It isn't a blood clot is it?

Answers:

Sounds like something called paresthesia. That can happen when you are wearing something tight because it can compress some of your nerves. It typically goes away on its own, especially since it was a short-term event. Try in the future not to wear the shoes quite so tight or at least take breaks in between games where you can remove the shoes or loosen them.

Blood clot would be unlikely if you're moving around that much. Blood clots would be more likely to happen if you're sitting/lying down for long periods of time or have some sort of genetic predisposition. If you were to have any sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, then you should go to the hospital immediately because that could be the result of a blood clot reaching your lungs.

In your situation, you will likely be fine in a few days, and it is not likely secondary to a blood clot or anything.
